Assurance Wireless Reduces Cost of Additional Minutes

Assurance Wireless is reducing the cost to supplement minutes for its Lifeline service which provides a free handset and 200 minutes of free wireless local and long-distance calling within the United States every month. Subscribers of the cellphone service, currently available to qualifying customers in New York, Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee, will now pay only 10 cents for each additional domestic minute instead of 20 cents per additional minute after exceeding the 200 minutes included with the plan.

Assurance Wireless, from Virgin Mobile USA, includes 200 minutes of airtime at no cost to eligible lower-income households, which is more than double the amount of minutes than the other leading national no-contract Lifeline wireless service. The reduced rate of 10-cents per additional minute helps keep the service economical for those needing more.  "It’s hard to beat the free 200 minutes, but we want to maximize the value of this service even more for those in need of additional airtime during these challenging times," said Gary Carter, national manager of partnerships for Assurance Wireless.

Since Assurance Wireless’s additional minutes are only available on a prepaid basis, customers will never get a surprise bill for additional usage.  Assurance Wireless also provides customers with free voicemail, call waiting, and caller ID.  Less than one quarter of current Assurance Wireless customers have used additional minutes beyond the 200 free minutes offered per month.

Beyond the free 200 minutes, customers can choose to add money to their account to purchase extras including 10 cent domestic minutes, international calling at competitive rates, 15-cent text, email or instant messages and more.

Assurance Wireless customers can also purchase messaging “bundles” that offer 1000 text, IM or email messages per month for $5 or unlimited messaging for $10 per month Monthly rates exclude taxes and surcharges . For job-seekers, mobile communication is a valuable resource and can truly be a lifeline to help them get back on their feet," continued Carter.

Customers eligible for Assurance Wireless include those eligible for or receiving Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or food stamps), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Federal Public Housing Assistance (FPHA) or Section 8, Low Income Home Energy Assistance (LIHEAP) or the National School Lunch Program’s Free Lunch Program.  Customers may also qualify based on household income.
