What do you get when you mix Mr. Holland’s Opus and Hamlet on an acid trip? The result is the witty and sacrilegious comedy Hamlet 2.
Dana Marschz (Steve Coogan) is a washed up actor turned struggling drama teacher in Tucson, AZ. His drama class has two students, Rand Posin (Skylar Astin) and Epiphany Sellars (Phoebe Strole). The only plays the department has ever put on are those based on hit Hollywood movies, like Erin Brockovich. He can’t even get a good review from his toughest critic, a young high school student.
His luck seems to change when his class suddenly fills up when others are canceled, due to budget problems. Dana has to learn how to deal with these rowdy kids and get them as enthusiastic as he is about drama. Just as things are starting to look up, the school board decides to cancel drama because he hasn’t produced anything worth saving.
With inspiration from the high school critic, Dana decides to write something of his own to save the drama department. After many hours of writing, the end result is the musical Hamlet 2. The unwholesome musical is met with opposition from the principal, who kicks them out of the auditorium and they are forced to put on the play in an abandoned building.
Even with all the resistance, Dana and his class fight with everything they have to make sure this play goes off without a hitch. They even get some help from Cricket Feldstein (Amy Poehler), a lawyer from the ACLU. This just gets the play and the class more media attention, and there is no such thing as bad publicity.
Just as you would expect, Hamlet 2 is just as crazy, offbeat, and delightful as Dana. You will find yourself rooting for this cast of loveable losers all the way until the end. I promise you won't be able to stop singing “Rock Me Sexy Jesus” until long after you leave the theaters.
