Asthma & Exercise By: Jonathan Bille |
| |
About fifteen percent of the American population suffers from Asthma. Symptoms can range from breathlessness to respiratory failure. Many of those who suffer from Asthma believe that exercise just isn’t an option for them.
While it is true that an asthmatic attack can be brought on by aerobic activity, exercise is still a necessity for many asthmatics to get fit and stay healthy.
Continuing research is suggesting that asthmatics can build up a tolerance to physical activity over time, making exercise easier and easier, and less likely to trigger an asthma attack.
It is important to note that sufferers of asthma should have a full medical examination and your physician’s permission before beginning any exercise routine. Depending on the severity of your asthma, your doctor may prescribe medication to help control symptoms while beginning an exercise routine.
As soon as you get the go ahead from your doctor to begin an exercise routine, consider some of the following to avoid any symptom flair up from exercising:
Take it slow. That goes for the whole routine, but particularly the warm up. Take extra time to stretch and to warm up before you begin exercising.
Start with lower intensity exercises. Activities like walking, swimming, are a great place to start because they don’t work your heart too much.
Take a break. When exercising with asthma, it’s important to take a lot of breaks and not to over work yourself.
Take time to cool down. When you finish exercising don’t just go on with your day. Take some time to stretch again, and take the time you need to cool down and relax.
Living with asthma doesn’t mean a life without activity, it just means being more careful about what you do. Exercising with asthma isn’t easy and you will always need to be cautious and in tune with how you are feeling and how your body is reacting. But one thing is for sure, exercise is a necessary part of living a healthy and happy life.
