Dems Look For Healthcare Consensus Ahead Of Vote Deadline
(Washington, DC) -- Hoping to reach some sort of consensus ahead of next week's tentative deadline for a first vote, Democratic leaders worked throughout the day Thursday to shore up support for healthcare reform. While they strived to reach agreements on key issues, such as abortion and federal insurance subsidies, senior Dems admitted they weren't where they needed to be in order to move forward. Presidential spokesman Robert Gibbs had earlier said healthcare reform could be done by March 18th, but that deadline now appears more optimistic than practical. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told reporters yesterday, quote, "It's not done yet and that's an understatement." |
